A group of ten willing employees took part in the recent ‘Row the Channel’ fundraising event organised by the Nomad Trust on the 4th February 2012.  The event was held at the Priory City of Lincoln Academy  in order to raise funds for the Lincoln based charity.
The Nomad trust are a small registered local charity offering direct access emergency night shelter to the homeless of Lincoln and support to the needy and vulnerable.  More information about the Nomad Trust can be found at
The team pictured collected the award for the largest donation raised in support of the event, presented by Brenda Sheils, the Nomad Trust’s Group Services Manager.  The team comprised a mix of staff from around the company including three ladies and completed the 35KM in just under 2 hours and 20 minutes. Other activities have allowed us to give to LIVES (Hemswell Cliff Area), the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, The Lincolnshire Retired Greyhound Trust and Red Nose Day.

A61 BARNSLEY (Dec 2010)

The A61 Wakefield Road Quality Bus Corridor Contract that we are undertaking consists of the construction of approximately 400m of single carriageway including two new roundabouts a major junction joining the A61 Wakefield Road and associated ancillary works including deep drainage and Contractor designed structures.
The route of the new carriageway is constructed upon engineered embankments due to poor ground conditions in the road corridor. The ground beneath the embankment has required extensive ground improvement works and this has been achieved using vibrated stone columns.
The Contractor designed structures include pedestrian underpass, storm water box culvert with an outfall headwall into the river Dearne and a protection slab to an existing culvert inhabited by Bats.

Fox are currently working at Lincoln Cathedral Quarry extracting stone for Lincoln Cathedral Stone Mason's and restoration of old quarry workings using previously excavated overburden and soils with backfill and compaction.

We have recently been involved in a very exciting design and build project as CDM Co-ordinator and Principal Contractor involving the construction of 3 Anaerobic Digesters, which are used to produce energy from food and brewery waste and are the first, of their type, in the country. The works included top soil strip, bulk excavation, design for earthworks and construction of the concrete foundations and hardstandings. The project also involved the installation, in a lined excavation, of the AD tanks which were 3.5 metres in diameter and up to 60 metres in length as well as a pumped foul and service water drainage system and a weighbridge.

WORKSHOP LTA (July 2010)

The workshop maintenance team have just reached a milestone 1000 days without a lost time accident, to award them for this amazing achievement they have each received a personalised fleece. To make people aware of the amount of days reached there are 2 boards located in the mess room and the workshop doorway. The idea came from the workshop's longest serving member Rick Bland who says the incentive and boards have helped the team more aware around the wokrshop area. Well done to all the workshop team, keep it up!

Workshop LTA

We have been busy during the third week in February being scrutinised by both John Walton from BM Trada, our certification body and Lorna Bainbridge, our IIP assessor. BM Trada have re-certified us for 3 standards as part of a 3 yearly in depth audit. We gained a lot of praise for some of the improvements we’ve made in the organisation including vehicle inspections and workshop quality control, cost control and management reporting, human resource management and overall company management! (If we have missed you, sorry!) Our IIP feedback was also really positive with many staff feeding back improvements we’ve made in communication and how people genuinely feel involved.

Thank you to everyone that was involved. Our task now is to keep up the good work! Stephen Fox

Fox continue their clean sweep for H&S reportable incidents with not having to report any incidents under RIDDOR in 2009. This is great news for Fox in the competitive markets in which we operate. It also sends out a message to our existing and prospective Clients of the quality of service that our reputation is built on.

We have also had several external audits conducted on our sites by our Clients. We have seized these opportunities to review our safety standards and systems to ensure a high standard is maintained. Congratulations for our latest site audit which was conducted by WRG and came back at 94% which is exemplary. Well done to all involved and lets aim up these high standards in 2010.

Fox are coming to the end of a contract with North Lincolnshire Council. The project involved the resurfacing of their vehicle storage, car park and yard areas at the Cottage Beck Depot in Scunthorpe. As part of the project Fox with our Design Partners re-designed the drainage systems that flow under and service the area to be resurfaced.

The works involved the breaking out and crushing of existing concrete bases and hard standing areas and installation of a new drainage system including a new petrol interceptor and linear drains. Various new services were also installed, including mains electrical, street lighting and water. When this work had been completed the whole area was built up to the new levels using 200mm of CBM material and 80mm block paving laid on 30mm of blast furnace slag dust to give the final running surface.

At the tail end of 2009 Fox took part in fund raising for charity on a couple of occasions. We participated in the “Wear it Pink Day” in aid of breast cancer and also wearing fancy dress in support of the “Help for Heroes” Charity. Both made for fun days at work not only dressing up, but quiz’s to enter and sweet treats to be had (all in the name of charity of course!). The efforts of all of those who took part and organised the events were not in vain as in total the two events raised over £800.00.

Fox have stepped up to the mark over recent months working closely with Clients and Consultants on multiple sites for WRG constructing Landfill Cell’s, Capping and Civil Engineering Works.

We have built a new cell at their Danes Moss site installing leachate drainage systems, engineering and conditioning material to quality controlled standards. At their Rigby site we have delivered capping works to existing cells incorporating Leachate Management Systems.

Paul Wilson, one of Fox’s most experienced Site Agents has come up trumps again, inspiring confidence in Veolia. We have recently uncovered a stash of 2nd world war munitions whilst constructing 2 new landfill cells at their Ling Hall site. The bomb disposal squad were called in and the 36 bombs were detonated with a controlled explosion. Onsite we have reused old plant washings/silt beds and conditioned the material making it suitable for capping of which we have laid over a 30,000m2 area.

Relations with Veolia have been positive resulting in the award of a second contract at their New Albion site completing restoration, capping and remediation of a slip on previously restored area.

Feedback from Veolia:
“Fox have been acting as a principal contractor on a £2M landfill construction scheme in the Midlands that involved some rather difficult and clearly unforeseen ground conditions, i.e. unexploded World War II shells. The excavation works continued for several days in the presence of a bomb disposal team and Fox proved to be very pragmatic and cooperative throughout the process. The whole issue was dealt with swiftly and professionally with little effect on the works programme.”

“We appointed Fox to complete restoration of some 6ha of former colliery land to a variety of end uses at our New Albion site. The works are now nearing completion and I can tell we made the right choice. Fox do stand out when it comes to moving soils which seems to be reflective of their experience and methodical approach to planning of a job.”

Fox have historically worked with Cemex throughout their midlands regions completing overburden stripping, aggregate extraction, restoration and infrastructure works. We have recently moved in to fresh pastures with Cemex winning 2 contracts in the South West against sizeable competition. Working closely with the Client we helped develop existing designs to fit their requirements and complete the restoration of a redundant aggregates quarry.

We have also completed an extraction and stockpile contract within 25 miles of the restoration site. We extracted 30,000m3 of gravel for Cemex at their Fawley site and are looking forward to opportunities with further phases of works encompassing extraction and restoration works.

Fox’s newest client Lidl’s have awarded us a contract at Beeston in Nottingham. The highways improvement work is now underway and the contract has doubled in value since starting on the site with “extras” being added by the client due to the high level of service and standard of works delivered. We are now looking at up to another 6 sites coming up with Lidl over 2009 /10.

Over a number of years Fox have worked within the composting industry constructing and extending composting facilities for multiple clients. We have built a relationship with The Composting Company Ltd over a number of months helping develop budgets, designs and demonstrating competence. This has led to the award of the extension of their Cumberlow Green IVC site. The delivery of the works has gone very well and has led to The Composting Company inviting us to work closely with them to suggest solutions and proposals at different sites.

Fox have worked closely with Balfour Beatty since the first works packages were let. We have so far completed 2 phases of environmental mitigation, creating wildlife habitats for Newts. During the course of the 2 phases Mr Tony Allen; Fox’s Contracts Manager worked closely with Balfour’s to ensure smooth delivery of the contract. The works have been so successful and we have since been awarded infrastructure works spanning the project site.

Fox (Owmby) Ltd has achieved the milestones set out in the initial action plan, demonstrating a continuing commitment to being an investor in people organisation. The milestones indicated in the action plan have been achieved, and as a result, the Assessor believes the organization is on target to undertake a full assessment against the Standard in March 2010.

There is evidence that extensive planning and consultation has been undertaken. The task is now to communicate the outcomes, effectively to the people.

The assessment in March 2010 will be used to identify the effectiveness of the different communication strategies the organisation will adopt over the forthcoming year.
The Assessor confirmed that the Standard was not changing over the forthcoming year and the assessment process would be the same as experienced in 2008.

Fox’s latest contract award by Swindon Borough Council involves the remediation of a former landfill site adding to the exsisting capping and landscaping the entire area making it fit for use by the public as a recreation area. The contract will run for 3 years and Jason Orman; Project Manager for Fox has made an outstanding start to the contract.

Fox have now completed their first site upgrade and extension for Land Network a group of green waste composting companies. The site based not far from Fox’s head office in Lincolnshire and was completed in record time with zero incidents on site. The client was more than pleased with the end results and the Environment Agency passed the site for use without issue

Fox’s culture of Health and Safety throughout our company has been recognised by the ceramic Industry and we have recently received their highly coverted Pledge Award for Health & Safety.  The nomination by one of our clients Ibstock Brick was as important to Fox as the award. Fox currently complete works on their sites throughout the UK.
