The new link road has been constructed off the existing highway network with the exception of the new roundabout at Cumberland Way and the road crossing at Pinn Lane which were constructed under temporary traffic management arrangements and road closures.
>Devon County Councile required the construction of Tithebarn Link Road, connecting the existing M5 Overbridge at Tithebarn Lane to a new roundabout constructed on Cumberland Way to provide access to new housing development sites and provide a primary bus route.
The works included:
- 950m of carriageway road with ghost island junctions, the width of the road varied from 6m to 10m wide and construction of footpaths and cycle-ways
- Embankment construction maximum height 2.5m, maximum cutting 2.5m. Fox carried out in-situ soils testing using our geotechnical consultant and on-site laboratory
- A new roundabout junction within the existing Cumberland Way carriageway and a new priority junction with Pinn Lane
- Modifications to the existing M5 Overbridge including excavation of the existing footway to allow the carriageway to be widened, shot blasting and re-waterproofing of the bridge service bay, installation of new service ducts and kerbing, resurfacing and deterrent paving
- Construction of 2 large retaining walls designed by Fox – one using locally sourced stone and blockwork and the other using precast Anderton blocks with geo-grid reinforcement
- Surface water drainage up to 600mm diameter and 5m deep including an attenuation pond of 960 m³ capacity discharging to an existing watercourse via an attenuation pond, hydro-brake chamber and a large outfall headwall
The works included:
- Foul sewers 150mm diameter up to 4m deep to suit adjacent developments
- Existing services diversions including HV, Telecoms and Fibre-optic cables
- New services supplies including HV, Gas, LV, BT, Water, Surf Telecom, Street Lighting
- 2Km of kerbing, footpath edgings and tactile paving works
- Street lighting and illuminated sign posts
