Ampthill Generator Site

Case study
Client: Conrad Energy
Contract Value: £160,000
Contract Duration: 8 Weeks

The Client – Conrad Energy

Conrad Energy is undertaking a roll out of peak demand gas fired power eneration sites across the UK. These sites generate electricity quickly in response to peak demand, a crucial role in the UKs increasingly renewable electricity profile.

We were contracted by Conrad to complete the groundworks at their new Ampthill Site.

The works were awarded on a Design and Build basis with an outline brief for location, size, shape and weights of equipment provided, along with specification for ducting between items of equipment.

This particular site required construction of 10 reinforced concrete bases to support the generators, radiators, oil tanks, welfare buildings and substations.

The site was a brownfield site with a gradual fall. We undertook a cut to fill exercise to level the site, and eliminate disposal off site.

Following this, we prepared the subgrade and imported Type 1 fill material to provide a subbase for the concrete foundations and the general hardstanding.

The concrete foundations were typically 300mm thick with mesh reinforcement. We opted to standardise designs to maximise reuse of shuttering, and reduce waste of reinforcement. Each base had an earthing bar cast in to connect to the site wide earthing strip. The bases required box outs and pits to provide access for duct entries.

The duct work on site include duct pits and ducting for HV, LV, and comms, along with excavation work for gas pipework and earthing grids. In total, approximately 700m of ducting was installed on this small site. The site also required repairs to an existing perimeter fence, and provision of three lighting columns including associated ducting back to the site control room.

On completion of concrete base construction and ducting work, the site was covered with a thin layer of single size chips to provide a uniform finish prior to handing the site to the client for M&E installations.

The site design was undertaken concurrent with the build as information on the available generators was fluid. We worked closely with Conrad’s representative to ensure that this didn’t impact on the construction programme or costs. The site was built in winter, and despite very cold conditions, snow and severe frost, was able to be built on time.

We achieved this through carefully planning pour days to suit weather forecasts, and ensuring that adequate protection measures were on site to prevent damage by rain or frost.
